NHS endorsement for Acupuncture

The NHS now endorses the use of Acupuncture for chronic back pain, migraine and tension-type headaches following an ever-increasing volume of supportive peer reviewed research.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a relaxing and effective branch of Chinese medicine, stimulating the body’s own natural healing abilities through the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. The theory of Acupuncture is based on qi, or energy, which flows through the body in channels known as meridians to bring about wellbeing and optimum function of body & mind. In good health, qi flows smoothly around the body, but its flow can be disrupted by stress, grief, injury, poor diet and lifestyle and so on. Disease is the result.

Whilst much of western medicine treats the disease directly, Acupuncture treats the whole person by restoring the harmonious flow of qi and addressing the cause (root) of conditions as well as the symptoms. This leads to longer term resolution of health problems and can even prevent onset of disease.

Facial Rejuvenation Cosmetic Acupuncture (FRCA) helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. The great benefit of FRCA is that it is a completely holistic experience. Traditional Acupuncture Vs Acupuncture with Physiotherapists/Chiropractors

Whilst NHS endorsement has certainly given the Acupuncturist profession a great boost many members of the public are confused about the type of Acupuncture they are receiving. Traditional Chinese Acupuncture requires a minimum of 3-years full time study. It is based on Chinese medicine principles which requires a deep understanding of over 400 Acupuncture points on the body and is applied in combination with knowledge of western sciences such as anatomy, physiology and pathology.

This is very different to “Medical Acupuncture” or “dry needling” which is commonly offered by some Chiropractors and Physiotherapists which allows the practitioner to needle trigger points or tension in muscles to help with pain. Dry needling can be studied over a single weekend. It is not based on Chinese medicine principles, which believe symptoms arise due to imbalances in the body therefore any treatment should address these imbalances whilst treating the symptoms. It supports the whole person and creates balance in the body, thereby addressing both symptoms and the causes leading to longer term resolution of problems.

Try Acupuncture with Preethi Sutton (please also review practitioners page for qualifications)
