BOst. Registered Osteopath

Andy Shiells is a registered osteopath and member of the British Osteopathic Association. He has been practicing locally since 2005 and has a keen interest and understanding in a wide range of sporting activities.

Why choose an osteopath?

Osteopaths treat more than just back problems. They diagnose and treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders as well as a number of other conditions.

Osteopaths commonly treat:

  • Back, neck and shoulder problems

  • Joint, posture and muscle problems

  • Leg pain and sciatica

  • Sports injuries

You may also see an improvement in some types of:

  • Asthma

  • Headaches including migraine

  • Pregnancy related pain

  • Sinusitis

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated primary healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the body and the effects of these disorders on function and general health.

Osteopaths consider each person as an individual. Utilising their highly developed sense of touch they identify problem areas of the body. Using gentle stretching and mobilising techniques as well as manipulating joints, they work with the body to create the perfect conditions to facilitate the healing process.

What can I expect?

Your first session will last approx 45 mins during which time Andy will compile a case history, which includes questions about your health past and present and you will be asked detailed questions about your complaint, medical history, general health and any medication you may be taking.

He will then carryout a careful physical examination and ask you to perform a series of simple movements. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothes prior to the examination.

Andy will then use his trained sense of touch to identify points of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain within the body. He will then discuss with you his findings and what treatment is recommended.  The number of treatments needed will depend on your condition but usually a patient can expect between 2 and 6 sessions. Many patients decide that they would like to have periodic preventative treatments to avoid recurring problems. Follow up treatments last approx 30 minutes.

Osteopathy – helping your wellbeing through life!

A baby has to cope with the stresses of birth, and a toddler may have frequent ear and/or chest infections. The school child carries heavy school bags, whilst the student spends long hours hunched over the computer. Driving to work and long hours at a desk increase the pains begun as a student. Sports people push their bodies to the limit and over-stretch their ligaments and tendons. In old age our joints stiffen and our circulation slows. These are the types of activities that lead to long or short term discomfort and pain, which an osteopath can alleviate.
